Camouflage I

The series Camouflage I documents large-scale models of mountain landscape found in the Swiss Alps. From World War I to the end oft the cold war the Swiss national defense strategy relied on a network of camouflaged fortifications covering the complete border line of the country to deter possible foreign invasions. Being expanded and modernized throughout the 20th century the system was decommissioned by the beginning of the 21st century.

These pictures of fake landscapes ask questions not only about the subject of the military infrastructure but what was my main photographic interest about the nature of the image itself. False mountains hiding among real ones, artillery doors opening within huge rock faces: The pictures of these landscapes cautiously reveal layers of history hidden for decades.
